Skowhegan is the county seat of Somerset County, Maine. It was originally inhabited by the indigenous Abenaki people. The Battle of Norridgewock took place on August 23, 1724, during the colonial frontier conflict referred to as Father Rale's War. The first permanent European settlement of the area began in 1771.:19.:17. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 8,620. Every August, Skow hegan hosts the state fair, the oldest continuously-held state fair in the United States. The town is located on the Kennebec River, which runs through the center of the town. The area was once part of the territory of the Kinipekw (later known as KenneBec) Norridewock tribe of Abenakis. The Abenki relied on agriculture (corn, beans, and squash) for a large part of their diet, supplemented by hunting, fishing, and the gathering of wild foods. Early variant names include Schoogun, Squahegan, Cohegan, Cohigin, Schou hegan, Scohigin, Cohiggin, Scowhegans, Scunkhegon, Squhegan and Sou Heavyon. The current name is derived from the Abenak language, which means "watching place [for fish]," and translates to 'watching place for fish' or 'watching spot for fish.' The town's name is also used as the name of a nearby lake, which was once a popular fishing spot.

History

Skowhegan is the primary city name, but also Cornville are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Skowhegan, Maine. The region of Maine was the territory of the Kinipekw (later known as Kennebec) Norridgewock tribe of Abenaki. The village's Catholic mission was run by a French Jesuit priest, Father Sébastien Râle. On August 22, 1724, Captains Johnson Harmon, Jeremiah Moulton, and Richard Bourne (Brown) led a force of two hundred rangers to the main Abenki village. The rangers massacred nearly two dozen women and children. Two English militiamen were killed. As a result of the raid, New Englanders flooded into the lower KenneBec region, establishing settlements there in the wake of the war. The first European settlement of the region around Skowhegan began in 1771.:1771.: The first place of settlement was an island in the River of Weston, about nine acres in size, that was owned by the company of Joseph Weston. There was no semblance of roads, and it was necessary to follow rough trails (created by the indigenous inhabitants) to follow the river. The region is now part of the state of Maine, and is home to the University of Maine at Ogunquit, which was founded in 1798. The town of Madison is on the shores of the Katahdin River, which is a tributary of the Kennenebec River. It is located about 20 miles from the town of Oguniti, where the first European settlers made their way up the river to the headwaters.

Geography

Skowhegan has a total area of 60.47 square miles (156.62 km²) Loomis Hill, elevation 870 feet (265 meters) above sea level, is the highest point in town. The town is drained by the Wesserunsett Stream and Kennebec River. It is located in the U.S. state of Maine, on the border with New Hampshire and New Hampshire. It has a population of 2,816. The U.N. As of the census of 2010, there were 8,589 people, 3,765 households, and 2,258 families residing in the town. There were 4,234 housing units at an average density of 71.9 per square mile (27.8/km²) The racial makeup of the town was 96.9% White, 0.4% African American, 0,4% Native American, and 0.7% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was2.80. The median income for a household in the city was $28,390, and $35,880 for a family. The per capita income for the town is $15,543. About 13.0% of families and 16.2% of those under the age of 18 were below the poverty line, including 22% and 13.4%, respectively, of those age 65 or over. The population in 1870 was 3,893. In 1880 it was 3, 861. In 1990 it was 4,077. In 2000 it was 8,824, and in 2010 it was 9,589. The town is located in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. It is located on the New Hampshire Turnpike, which runs through the town's southern tip. The state's highest point is Mount Washington, which has a population of 3,716.

Arts and culture

The Skowhegan Historic District is a group of buildings in Maine. The district includes the Swinging Bridge, which was built in 1883. It also includes the Beaux-Arts-style building that was dedicated to a Native American woman in 1887. The area is also home to a public library, a public park, and a public works museum. It is one of ten districts in the state that are designated as historic landmarks by the U.S. Department of the Interior, which is responsible for the design and construction of many of the district's buildings.
